Ben and Jerry's Celebrates Gay Marriage with New Ice Cream
The famous ice cream company, Ben & Jerry's, is temporarily changing the name of their "Chubby Hubby" ice cream to "Hubby Hubby," in celebration of Vermont's legalization of same sex marriage.
For the month of September, Ben & Jerry's will be sending out trucks to give out free cartons of the newly labeled "Hubby Hubby" ice cream, reports the Boston Herald. They will also be selling "Hubby Hubby" sundaes at their Vermont ice cream parlors. However, the cartons in stores will remain the same, since changing product labels can take 18 months.
The progressive ice cream company partnered with marriage equality group Freedom to Marry to create the new name, writes the Chicago Tribune. By doing this, Ben & Jerry's "aims to raise awareness of the importance of marriage equality and to encourage other states to follow the blazing trails of Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, and Maine."
According to Reuters, Chief Executive Officer of Ben & Jerry's Walt Freese says of the new marriage equality law: "The legalization of marriage for gay and lesbian couples in Vermont is certainly a step in the right direction and something worth celebrating with peace, love and plenty of ice cream."
