The Hobbit Gets the Green Light
Lord of the Rings fans will be happy to know that production will proceed on two new films based on J.R.R. Tolkien's 1937 novel, "The Hobbit." The project was stalled due to litigation between New Line Cinema, who released the "Lord of the Rings" movies and the gatekeepers of Tolkien's estate.
Alex Dobuzinskis from Reuters.com reports that trustees of the estate claimed they were owed $150 million in profits from those very films. This put a block on potential production of "The Hobbit." Publisher of Tolkien's books, HarperCollins Ltd., joined the estate in the lawsuit. A settlement was reached but conditions were not stipulated to the press.
Production may now go forth with "The Hobbit," which will be split into two films and directed by Guillermo del Toro of "Pan's Labyrinth," and "Hellboy." The "Rings" movies grossed a total of $2.9 billion at box offices worldwide.
