Kennedy Center Honorees Announced
The Kennedy Center announced its honorees for the 32nd annual honors ceremony, to be held on Dec. 6 and airing on CBS Dec. 29 as a primetime special. The ceremony has earned four Emmy's for outstanding variety special. According to Tom O'Neil of LATimes.com, the five performers are: Mel Brooks, Dave Brubeck, Grace Bumbry, Robert de Niro and Bruce Springsteen. Beginning in 1978, the Kennedy Center Honors have become virtually the highest recognition of arts achievement in the country. President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will host a gala for the honorees the day before the ceremony. They will also attend the awards. People are most likely familiar with the works of Brooks, de Niro and Springsteen. Brubeck is responsible for the Dave Brubeck Quartet and the famed jazz song, "Take Five." Bumbry broke racial barriers in opera, and became one of the leading mezzo-sopranos of her day.
