Avenue Q Heads Off-Broadway

The puppet musical will continue to play at a smaller venue.

Avenue Q Media Call

The long-running Broadway puppet musical, "Avenue Q," played its final performance Sunday night, but will soon reopen Off-Broadway.

The New York Daily News reports that at the curtain call, producer Kevin McCollum announced that the show will move from the Golden Theatre to its new Off-Broadway home at New World Stages. Performances at the smaller, 499-seat venue will begin Oct. 9.

"There will be fewer seats, but more beer," McCollum said. Broadway shows rarely if ever move to Off-Broadway houses during the same season.

Entertainment Weekly reports that during its over six year run, "Avenue Q" has played 2,534 performances to become the 20th longest running show in Broadway history.

In 2004, the play won the Tony for Best Musical against "Wicked," which still plays to sell out crowds at the Gershwin Theater on Broadway.
