New film, "Precious," gains support from Oprah Winfrey.

Precious Screening - 2009 Toronto International Film Festival

One of America's most influential women has begun backing a new film called "Precious." Oprah Winfrey signed on as an executive producer late into the project; the film is directed by Lee Daniels. The film was screened by the Toronto International Film Festival.

"Precious" is based on a book called "Push," by Sapphire. The story is set in 1987 Harlem, N.Y., telling the story of an illiterate teenager, named Claireece "Precious" Jones, who has become impregnated by her father for the second time.

The upcoming film stars Mo'Nique, who plays Precious Jones's mother, and newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, who plays the title role. "It is so raw that it sucks the air out of the room by the end of the film," Oprah told reporters before the movie's gala presentation in Toronto, according to Reuters. She also went on to say, "A film like this comes along once in a time."

Tyler Perry is also approving this film and during the Toronto International festival it has had rave reviews and is generating Oscar buzz.
