20-Year-Old Del Potro Shocks Tennis World, Upsets Federer in US Open Final

The 20-year-old Argentinean stops Federer's remarkable consecutive U.S. Open singles championship streak at five, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2.

Juan Martin del Potro, a 20-year-old Argentinean tennis phenom, stunned the tennis world by upsetting #1 ranked Roger Federer in five sets to win the 2009 U.S. Open tournament. Del Potro, who had pulled an upset in the semifinal round by defeating Rafael Nadal in straight sets, has defeated the world's two most highly regarded players in back-to-back matches.

Del Potro's dramatic upset effectively put an end to one of the most impressive streaks in all of sports, which was Federer's string of five consecutive U.S. Open singles championships. Despite the fact that del Potro shockingly disposed of Nadal with relative ease in their U.S. Open semifinal matchup, very few gave him a chance to legitimately threaten his opponent in the final, due to Federer's impeccable track record in Grand Slam finals.

In the first set, Federer cruised to a 6-3 victory and it appeared as if he was on top of his game. However, del Potro displayed his courageousness and perseverance by battling back to win the second set in a tiebreak. His serve was nothing short of dominant and his aggressive style appeared to catch Federer off guard in the latter stages of the match.

According to the New York Times, del Potro has risen up the rankings from the #65 position to the #6 slot over the last 14 months. When asked by an interviewer what it felt like to be a U.S. Open champion, he responded by saying, "I don't have words to explain."
