Brady Struggles Early, Leads Patriots to 4th Quarter Comeback Win
In his first regular season game since he sustained a season-ending knee injury in the 2008 opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady struggled for three quarters to find a rhythm. He appeared out of sync, inconsistent with his accuracy and not quite up to the form he displayed during his record-breaking 2007 campaign.
However, Brady caught fire in the 4th quarter, throwing two touchdown passes to tight end Benjamin Watson to lead the Patriots to a dramatic 25-24 victory over their division rival, the Buffalo Bills. Buffalo led by 5 points with just over two minutes remaining in the game when the NFL's leading kick returner in 2008, Leodis McKelvin, fumbled a return at the 30 yard line where the Patriots recovered.
On the ensuing drive, Brady threw a perfect pass to Watson in the end zone for the go ahead score with less than a minute left in the game. He finished the game having completed 39 of his 53 pass attempts for 378 yards, 2 touchdowns and one interception. Brady's favorite target, All-Pro wide receiver Randy Moss, caught 12 passes for 141 yards on the night.
After the game was over, ESPN sideline reporter Suzy Kolber asked Brady about what it felt like to lead such a dramatic comeback win in his first regular season game back from injury. Brady responded by saying, "It's not how we drew it up and we did a lot of things poorly but I'm glad we got the win."
