The New Horror Genre: Female Viewer

Diablo Cody's new horror film, "Jennifer's Body," helps usher in the new era of horror, one geared towards females.

Diablo Cody, the Oscar winning writer of "Juno," is taking on the horror genre in her next film, "Jennifer's Body," out on Friday. Megan Fox plays Jennifer, a high school head cheerleader type who becomes possessed and hungry for her male classmates, literally. Amanda Seyfried of "Mama Mia!"plays her dorky best friend, Needy, who must find the strength to stop Jennifer. The horror genre has been characterized in the past as being somewhat sexist, with helpless females often suffering horrendous deaths. That has certainly changed in recent years, bringing strong female characters to the center of more recent stories, and "Jennifer's Body" is no different. The vampire craze of late is dominated by a female audience; it is no wonder Hollywood is aiming a new era of horror towards its female constituents. Ultimately the film reflects on the tumultuous relationships often experienced between high school girls, though slightly more deranged.
