Abercrombie and Fitch Show Beyonce Some "Fierce" Competition
Beyonce's "Single Ladies" video may be better than Taylor Swift's "You Belong with Me" video, according to Kanye West, but when it comes to teen clothing giants Abercrombie and Fitch, Beyonce gets no love.
Beyonce is currently being sued by the clothing company over the name of a fragrance line that the singer will be releasing soon. Abercrombie and Fitch, who markets a fragrance known as Fierce, is afraid that Beyonce will use her alter ego, Sasha Fierce, to market her own line.
"The terms Fierce and Sasha Fierce are not being used as names of a Beyonce fragrance," Coty, the perfume company that will be launching Beyonce's fragrance line, said. Coty also stated that details surrounding the fragrance line, including the name, will be released sometime before the launch of the fragrance, which is expected to launch in early 2010.
Abercrombie and Fitch hold a trademark for the Fierce name, and have held that trademark since 2003. In a suit filed by the company in Columbus, Ohio (where the company is based), the clothing company feels that consumers of their fragrance could be confused into thinking that Beyonce is linked with their line, and that Beyonce will unfairly benefit from such confusion. They feel that such confusion could cost them a loss in sales and control over their trademark. The purpose of the suit is to prevent Beyonce from using any form of the word "fierce" in the branding of her fragrance.
