NCIS: Los Angeles Episode One: Identity

NCIS spin off introduces old and new characters but does it have staying power?

Don't have to be a fan of "NCIS" to watch the spin off, "NCIS: Los Angeles." The first episode, Identity, makes sure to introduce and catch everyone up on the main characters that where introduced on "NCIS." This installment starts out with a car chase, shoot out and dead Navy officer. There is Special Agent G. Callen (Chris O'Donnell) returning from a traumatic shooting one month early and his partner Sam Hanna (LL Cool J). From the start the two characters show their ease with one another and their partnership is not forced. O'Donnell plays the mysterious, hurt, but able agent. LL Cool J acts well as the subdued partner.

Their new offices are located in a "condemned" hotel, no standard cubicles or conference rooms. This is a chance to meet the other cast/ team members. The psychologist, Nate Getz (Peter Cambor) has a nice dry comedy to him. Another special agent Kensi Blye (Daniella Ruah) is the drool factor for the men watching the show. Eric Beal (Barrett Foa) as the computer expert. There is the "green" newcomer with his knowledge of Latin and a history lesson Dominic Vail (Adam Jamal Craig). Hetty Lange (Linda Hunt) is the mother hen which I can't stop thinking of "The Kindergarten Cop." But the episode shows they are all exceptional at their jobs and roles.

The show unfolds smooth. It goes from a murder, to a killing, to a kidnapping and then to blackmail without confusion. I figured out the killer just from the phone call but the NCIS team still kept my interest with engaging scenes and characters. I hope Callen's mysterious past doesn't become the focus of every episode.

First episodes are usually not enough for me to damn or praise a show but "NCIS: LA" has the right formula to make me want to see the next episode. Will it be as good as the original? Guess we will have to wait and see.
