Premiere Of Paramount Pictures'

After initially pleading innocent, screenwriter and Academy Award co-writer of "Pulp Fiction," Roger Avary has been sentenced to a year in jail on charges stemming from a 2008 car accident that left one man dead.

Avary was charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence while his passenger, a friend visiting from Italy, suffered fatal injuries. Avary and his wife sustained serious injuries during the accident which occurred in the city of Ojai, CA. a short distance from Los Angeles. He was released from jail after posting $50,000 bail.

Police report Avary was driving in excess of 100 mph when he lost control of his Mercedes and slammed into a telephone pole. In August, Avary changed his plea to guilty of gross vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving.

In a Ventura County Superior courtroom on Sept 29, Avary was sentenced and received an additional five years of probation. Additionally, Presiding Judge Edward Bordie ordered Avary to enroll in a DUI education program and cited leniency in the case due to the filmmaker's show of remorse and lack of criminal background.

Avery is currently working on the sequel to the film 'Silent Hill' and has been given permission to work on the screenplay while in prison.
