Pearl Jam Topping the Charts, Sales Still Less Than in the 90's
Pearl Jam proves they still have what it takes to dominate the charts.
The band steals the number one spot away from Jay-Z, who held the lead with his album, "The Blueprint," for the past two weeks. This is Pearl Jam's ninth album, titled "Backspacer," and the band has performed in Target commercials for its promotion.
It's been 13 years since the Seattle band ruled the Billboard charts, in which "No Code" sold 367,000 copies in its opening week. Their 2006 self-titled release peaked at the number two spot.
So far, "Backspacer" has sold 189,000. The sales drop from their 90's heyday is no doubt due to the declining music industry that continues to struggle finding ways to make selling music profitable. Looking back at the numbers for Pearl Jam's success, like "Vs" or "Vitalogy" (950,000 and 877,000, respectively), the future of big music business still looks pretty bleak.
