Elizabeth Smart Testifies She Was Raped Three or Four Times Daily
Elizabeth Smart was just 14 when she was taken from her bedroom in the middle of the night by Brian David Mitchell, a homeless preacher, seven years ago. In court, Smart recalled the details of the horrific nine-month ordeal.
She was held captive in the Salt Lake City, UT., mountains and San Diego for nine months. When she was first brought to the Utah settlement, "He performed a ceremony to marry me to him, and after that he proceeded to rape me," Smart said. She added that Mitchell kept her from escaping by attaching chains around her ankles and tying them to nearby trees. He would wear the key to unlock the chains around his neck, she said.
She stated that he raped her "three or four times a day", and soon Wanda Barzee, Mitchell's wife who is also under arrest for related crimes, got angry at Mitchell and demanded attention. "She said, 'All you do is lust after her,'" Smart revealed.
So Mitchell decided to rotate between the two women. Despite these pauses, "There wasn't an actual 24-hour period he wasn't able to rape me" Smart said.
Both Barzee and Mitchell have been repeatedly declared mentally incompetent to stand trial for the kidnapping, sexual assault, burglary and conspiracy to commit kidnapping charges.
After her difficult day in court, Elizabeth Smart is moving on. She will leave for an overseas church mission trip while the judge decides whether her accused captor is mentally fit to stand trial.
