Jon and Kate plus Eight - Time to Organize!

A professional organizer helps Kate organize the basement. To the children's excitement many old toys are uncovered.

Alexis and Aaden play around in the unorganized basement jumping on boxes. Kate mentions how there's a room that needs to be dumped. There were lots of events that kept Kate and Jon busy from cleaning so Kate called on the help of two local professional organizers,Diane Albright and Paula Davis, to help her.

Kate sees the mess every time she sits in the interview room. She's driven crazy by clutter. The two women arrive and explain four organizational steps:

1. Identify Items2. Sort & Categorize3. Establish Storage Solutions4. Label & Store

Kate is the only one who is obsessed with organization in the Gosselin house, but no one else is. She reminds the two organizers that the kids are excited to find lost toys. There is a baby sitter who is taking care of the kids, but she will continue to remain anonymous.

In the basement Kate and the women sort through all the items. They created a Jon box, and an electronics box, but Kate is convinced that she'll never go through that box ever again. Kate's friend Jamie from Michigan came to help and support Kate. Clay, Jamie's son, plays with the children but he continues to argue with the kids like they were relatives.

Kate pulls out the "vomit bucket" which was the children's bath basins that the hospitals used to bathe the children. Kate explains that the vomit buckets are sturdy and durable that it works so well with the children. It's an honor for a sick kid to have the bucket when they are sick.

The kids would come in and out and play with toys that Kate pulls out. Kate finds Hannah's kitty and Hannah immediately gets excited for it. When they found out that the toys were coming out all the children invaded the basement. Kate secretly threw out some of the stuffed toys while all the other kids were playing. Joel chops a girl with his "teetee," a toy tomahawk. Alexis gets her doll and is excited.

Kate finds Mady's first year calendar and gets Kate emotional. She spent all her time to jot notes about the twins. This helped drive Kate to continue sorting and soon the boxes started to clear. Soon Kate was able to play with a new joy: the label maker. She's shocked that no one has ever e-mailed her to stop using post-its and just buy a label maker. During dinner more shelving was installed, ending day one's adventures.

Day two. With the shelves already installed, Diane started to sort all the winter clothes. Kate wanted to go quickly because she was bringing Mady and Cara to a Jonas Brothers concert later that day. The household cleaning items label was sorted.

Outside of the basement, the kids were arranging the toilet paper. They have been allowed to disburse the toilet paper in different bathrooms since they were four. The kids run around while Kate hands the toilet paper to the kids and tells them where to go.

By 10:50AM there was a little struggle because there were places that Kate didn't want things. She had to explain that she wouldn't want a gift wrapping center. She knows that she would never make a good organizer for others because she wouldn't know how to make things more accessible and functional for the specific person. Diane was trying to add pizazz, but Kate is too busy to notice it. The kids started to play dress-up and the kids argue over penguin outfits and continue to play.

At 11:30AM Kate drops a piece of metal on her foot, but she's unfazed. Kate's biggest fear that the project didn't go from start to finish. Kate started to place new plastic labels on boxes that she could replace the information on.

Paula has worked with large families, but never to this scale. Kate's decisiveness helped focus the two women. They complete labeling all the boxes. Kate is so grateful for the organizers for their patience. Everything is eventually finished by 1:35PM. Kate wonders how long the cleanliness will stay since she is the only one who is focused on order.
