“South Park,“ season 13, episode 8, “Dead Celebrities“
7-Oct-2009
Written by: Rachel Kolb
Ike sees recent dead celebrities, and after the Ghost Hunters fail to help, Ike becomes possessed with the spirit of Michael Jackson.
Episode Summary:
Ike is seeing famous dead people, including infomercial’s star Billy Mays, Farrah Fawcett, and David Carradine. His parents send him to a therapist, and there is a “Sixth Sense” moment. When asked if he sees any dead celebrities right now, Ike replies, “Just Ed McMahon.” Eric finds out that Billy Mays is one of the dead celebrities that Ike is seeing, and he vows to help Billy Mays’ ghost any way he can.
“Ghost Hunters” show up in South Park, and they are so scared of everything that they are pissing and crapping in their pants. The ghost hunters freak out and run off, and Ike goes into a coma from the ghosts.
At the hospital, a creepy doctor explains that the ghosts are probably souls caught in purgatory, like a person waiting on an airplane that isn’t taking off but won’t let the passengers back off the plane.
The creepy doctor contacts Billy Mays, Walter Cronkite, and Michael Jackson through Ike. Michael Jackson doesn’t believe that he’s really dead, so he’s keeping himself and all the rest of the dead celebrities in purgatory. An upset Michael Jackson kills the creepy doctor, and his spirit possesses Ike.
After some looking online, they find out that in order to get Michael Jackson’s spirit to leave Ike’s body, the spirit needs to be recognized as what it always wanted to be. In life, Michael Jackson always wanted to be a little white girl, so the boys enter Ike into a children’s beauty pageant.
All the recent dead celebrities are getting impatient waiting on their metaphorical plane while Michael Jackson competes in the children’s beauty pageant, and things aren’t looking too promising for Jackson winning the beauty pageant. Cartman, however, saves the day when he finds out that he and the judge have something in common: a love of Chipotle. Both of them cannot eat Chipotle without excreting blood, but luckily, Billy Mays has a cleaning product for that!
Michael Jackson wins the competition, and his spirit leaves Ike who is left standing on stage in a sparkly two-piece swimsuit, wondering how he got there.
Final Thoughts:
This was a good kick-off for the second half of the 13th season of “South Park,” and the writers once again pushed the limit by featuring dead beloved celebrities. Their targets included “Ghost Hunters,” children’s beauty pageants, and Chipotle. I wouldn’t count this episode among my favorites of all time, but “Dead Celebrities” was a fun half-hour of television.
