After “This Is It“ was released online, singer Paul Anka claims he co-wrote it.
Michael Jackson never seems to escape from conflict and controversy. According to Reuters, after Jackson’s new song “This Is It” was released online yesterday, Peurto Rican singer-songwriter Paul Anka was astonished and outraged. Apparently, he and Jackson co-wrote the song together years ago, and Jackson’s estate released the song as a Michael Jackson original without any contact with Anka.
After being threatened with a lawsuit by Anka, administrators of the Jackson estate acknowledged the claims and agreed to give him 50 percent of the copyright to the song. Anka said the song was originally called “My Way” and, according to the New York Times, he and Jackson recorded it in 1983 for Anka’s album “Walk a Fine Line.” Anka said that he had a falling out with Jackson, who left with the master tapes, which Anka never got back.
The song was released as “This Is It,” and has the same vocals and piano accompaniment as “My Way,” but Jackson’s version has some added vocals from his brothers. Of course, the changes didn’t fool Mr. Anka.
