Swiss Authorities Tipped U.S. On Polanski

Swiss authorities contacted the U.S. prior to Roman Polanski's arrival into Zurich, asking whether they would pursue an arrest

New evidence has surfaced indicating Swiss officials tipped off U.S. authorities on Roman Polanski's whereabouts prior to his arrest. The officials apparently notified the U.S. that the director was expected in Zurich to accept an award at a film festival, and asked whether the U.S. would be requesting his arrest, according to mercurynews.com.

A letter was faxed from Swiss officials to the U.S. Office of International Affairs on Sept. 22. They in turn contacted the Los Angeles district attorney's office, which drafted a warrant. Polanski was then arrested upon arrival into Zurich on Sept. 26.

Why Switzerland decided to help the United States in their pursuit is unknown and somewhat uncharacteristic; Polanski is a frequent visitor as he owns a Swiss chalet, and in fact requested to be put on house arrest there.
