Lil Wayne Pleads Guilty to Gun Charge
The Grammy-winning rapper, born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., has pleaded guilty to attempted weapon possession, and expects to receive a one-year jail sentence. He had previously pleaded not guilty to the illegal gun possession charges in 2007.
Prosecutors claim that Wayne's DNA has been found on the loaded gun which was discovered on his tour bus two years ago by the police. Following his arraignment, Wayne was released on a $70,000 bond on one count of criminal weapons possession and one charge of criminal possession of a loaded weapon. These charges could send him to prison for anywhere between three-and-a-half years to 15 years.
Now, after months of delay, it is the DNA evidence that would be irrefutable proof in the case. While his lawyer has made no statement, AllHipHop.com reported on Wednesday that Wayne is planning to accept a plea deal that would result in an eight-month jail term.
The Associated Press said that the hearings on the DNA issue, which began on Wednesday, are expected to last several days. His trial is due to begin on Jan 20 next year.
