NBC Picks Up 'Community

NBC has picked up as well as renewed a cornucopia of shows to fill its 2009 fall season lineup including the freshman comedy "Community," the medical drama "Mercy" and the sophomore comedy "Parks and Recreation."

On Friday, NBC announced it was picking up the new comedy "Community," as well as the drama "Mercy" and renewing the comedy "Parks & Recreation."

According to an article on Variety.com, "Net ordered nine more episodes of each show. Left off the list: new drama ‘Trauma,' which has struggled on Monday nights.'"

NBC/Universal Media Studios primetime entertainment prexy Angela Bromstad announced the pickups and commended "Community" for "delivering a first-rate, quality show that is very promising as the newest of NBC's first-rate Thursday night comedies."

As for "Mercy," which stars Michelle Trachtenberg, who recently starred opposite Zac Efron in the 2009 comedy "17 Again" and James LeGros, who starred on the Fox television dramedy "Ally McBeal," Bromstad cited her vision of the show being a "strong player" for the network.Bromstad also gave props to the comedy "Parks & Recreation" for becoming more imaginative in its second season. "Parks" stars ex-"Saturday Night Live" alumni Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, who has starred on the hit NBC sitcom "The Office" and Aziz Ansari, who most recently starred opposite Adam Sandler in the 2009 dramedy "Funny People," among others.

"Community" stars Joel McHale as a lawyer who faked his degree and winds up attending community college. The show also stars funnyman Chevy Chase.

"Mercy" is a medical drama focusing on three nurses at the fictional Mercy Hospital in Jersey City, New Jersey.

"Parks & Recreation" is a comedy created by Greg Daniels and Michael Schur, who were members of the creative team that developed the hit NBC sitcom "The Office." "Parks" follows the deputy head of the Parks and Recreation department in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana as she teams up with a nurse to turn a construction pit into a park while also mentoring to a college intern.
