Kansas Number 1 in Preseason Poll
29-Oct-2009
Written by: Matt Bultman

Kansas begins the season ranked number one in both preseason polls released last week.

The Kansas basketball team has finally made headlines for the right reasons.

The Jayhawks are atop the preseason ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches’ Poll, which was released last week. Kansas was also ranked number 1 in the AP preseason poll.

NCAA Sweet 16: Michigan State Spartans v Kansas Jayhawks

"We will have a bull's-eye on our back," Kansas coach Bill Self said in an interview with ESPN's First Take. "It will make us tougher and harder and if it makes us tougher and harder throughout the season, we'll be better in March."

Michigan State was ranked second in the polls. The Spartans are coming off of a surprising season when they finished second in the NCAA tournament. Texas, North Carolina and Kentucky round out the top 5.

Kansas has had its share of trouble this past off-season. According to ESPN, the latest incident occurred when junior guard Brady Morningstar was suspended from first-semester games after being arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated on October 3rd.

University police have also opened an investigation into a September brawl which involved members of both the Jayhawk football and basketball teams.
