DreamWorks takes over "Doggy Day Care'

DreamWorks Studios has gone for scribe Laurie Craig's pitch for the comedy "Doggy Day Care."

According to an article on HollywoodReporter.com, "The comedy is about what really happens when dogs get together without human supervision. Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas (‘Mona Lisa Smile') and Julie Goldstein (‘Chicago'), who created the original story with Craig, are producing.'"

"Doggy" isn't the first canine-themed film DreamWorks has produced. 2009's "Hotel for Dogs" grossed $113 million worldwide when Paramount released it in January. "Hotel" starred Emma Roberts, who played the title character in the 2007 family comedy "Nancy Drew" and was featured alongside actress and pop singer Joanna "JoJo" Levesque, in the 2006 family fantasy comedy "Aquamarine."

Chloe Dan, a DreamWorks executive, was the one who brought "Doggy" to the attention of the studio.

"We were utterly charmed by the story they have crafted, and we think audiences will love it as much as we did," said DreamWorks co-president of production Holly Bario.

Craig was also the author behind the screenplays for past DreamWorks features such as the Gena Rowlands/Tony Shalhoub/Cheech Marin 1998 dramedy "Paulie" and she also co-wrote the screenplay for the 2004 Anne Hathaway/Hugh Dancy family fantasy comedy hit "Ella Enchanted."

In addition to "Doggy," Craig co-wrote the film adaptation of the Beverly Cleary book, "Ramona and Beezus," which Fox 2000 is producing and is slated to be released in August.

Craig also recently penned "Left Tern" for Fox Animation.
