Men in Black' to become a trilogy
Sony is going ahead with "Men in Black 3," with Etan Cohen, who wrote the 2008 Ben Stiller-directed war comedy "Tropic Thunder" penning the script and Barry Sonnenfeld returning to direct the latest installment of the franchise although no official agreement has been reached as of yet.According to an article on HollywoodReporter.com, "The studio is eyeing a 2010 start date and could go as soon as the spring. The X-factor remains Will Smith. The A-lister, who starred with Tommy Lee Jones in the first two, has not committed to the pic, though in recent days the buzz in development circles has been that he is now interested in returning. Smith does not currently have a go movie lined up. Tommy Lee Jones' involvement is uncertain."
Sony let loose the news back in April of yet another "Men in Black" ("MIB") motion picture, which tells the tale of a group of anonymous secret agents whose mission it is to roam the planet eliminating dangerous aliens, cleverly disguised as humans, and zapping away the memories of any actual humans that interfere in their quest.
The HollywoodReporter.com article also mentions that, "'MIB' has proved to be one of the most successful comedy franchises of all time. The two pics which came out in 1997 and 2002, respectively combined to earn nearly $1.1 billion worldwide. The $250m domestic of the first film reps the second-highest total of Smith's career.'"
Even though Ed Solomon wrote the script for the first "Men in Black," and Robert Gordon and Barry Fanaro penned the second film, the change to Cohen as the third film's scribe indicates to the entertainment industry that Sony's main objective is to retain the franchise's top level standing.
