Grisly Coyote Attack Takes the Life of Young Canadian Folk Singer.
29-Oct-2009

Officials say the attack may have been caused by animal illness.

Taylor Mitchell, up-and-coming Canadian folk singer and nominee for Canadian Folk Music Awards Young Performer of the Year, was killed by coyotes this week in a national park in Nova Scotia.

Only 19, Taylor was attacked on Tuesday afternoon shortly after starting off on the Skyline Trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Other hikers who witnessed the attack called 911. She was pronounced dead 12 hours after being airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Holifax.

A native of Georgian Bay area in Ontario, Taylor lived in Toronto and had taken the hike as a break while touring the Maritime provinces. A usually safe area, authorities are baffled by the cause of the attack. One coyote shot was shot and killed by police and will be tested for diseases that may have triggered such aggression.

Family members remember Taylor as a naturalist who loved the outdoors and was experienced in wilderness camping. Memorial services have yet to be planned.
