“Mad Men“ Episode 12
2-Nov-2009
Written by: Blakely Slater

The characters were faced with J.F.K’s assassination in the twelfth episode of “Mad Men.“

Sunday night’s episode of “Mad Men” dealt with the monumental historical event of John F. Kennedy’s death and the effect the murder had on daily life, while also leaving room to feature the continuation of the characters’ stories.

Before the assassination became the focus, Pete learned that Cosgrove was rewarded the Senior VP in charge of account services job, and was not too pleased that he was still only head of account management. Peggy and Duck had a rendezvous in a hotel near the office, after which they turned on the TV and saw the horrifying reports.

After this moment, virtually everyone’s eyes were fixed to the television screen. Betty and Carla cried, and Don attempted to assure his family, and himself, that everything would be fine.

Roger’s daughter’s wedding went on as planned, but many guests did not attend, and a large portion of those who did remained in the hotel kitchen to watch the news instead of joining in the celebrations. Jane, Roger’s wife, would not even come out for the toast, but did end up intoxicated and in need of being put to bed. After fulfilling this task, Roger called Joan for comfort.

Henry Francis was one of the guests, and he and Betty had their attention on each other throughout the party. After returning home to see Jack Ruby shoot Lee Harvey Oswald, Betty was distraught and left home to meet Henry in a parking lot. There, Henry confessed that he wanted to marry her, and was convinced that he would be able to satisfy her.

Betty seemed to like these words, and told Don that she did not love him once she was back at home. Don only responded by telling her that she would feel better in the morning.

The episode ended with the titles rolling while Skeeter Davis’ “The End of the World” played.
