Celebs Run Marathon For Charities
2-Nov-2009
Written by: Blakely Slater

Ed Norton, Anthony Edwards, Alanis Morissette, and Sal Masekela participated in a NYC marathon to raise money for good causes.

A handful of celebrities broke out their running shoes in the interest of charity on Sunday.

Ed Norton, Alanis Morissette, Anthony Edwards, and Sal Masekela all took part in the 2009 ING New York City Marathon, and all did so to raise money for various charities, reports Usmagazine.com.

Norton, 40, and Morissette, 35, ran in the hopes of increasing funds for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust. Right before running, Norton tweeted “I can’t resist…please sponsor $26 for a chance to win an official team jersey.”

The star of “Fight Club” finished with the best time, 3:48:01, of the four stars. With this time, he accomplished his goal of beating Sarah Palin’s time when she ran in 2005, an intention he expressed to MTV’s Josh Horowitz.

“I’m gonna beat Sarah Plain like a rug!” he told Horowitz.

Norton was not only successful in clocking in before others, but he was also a champ at raking in money.

A writer for Ecorazzi estimates that everyone running on the Maasai team raised a total of $763,000 and that $301,000 of that came from Norton’s efforts.

Edwards, 47, ran for Shoe4Africa, a charity that works to build public hospitals in Kenya. The former “ER” actor completed the marathon in 4 hours, 8 minutes, and 20 seconds.

Masekela, anchor for E! “Daily Ten,” donated 100 percent of the proceeds he raised to his self-started charity, Stoke Mentoring. Although he set out to beat P. Diddy’s 2003 time, the 26.2-mile race proved too tough for him to fulfill this wish. Masekela finished in about five hours.

The course led runners through the five boroughs of Manhattan before eventually ending in Manhattan.
