The Good Wife Season 1 Episode 6 Recap
4-Nov-2009
Written by: Marjorie Quinn

“Conjugal” first aired Tuesday November 3, 2009.

The episode starts out with Alicia and the crew studying a TV movie called “Cop Killer” based on the Clarence Wilcox case. The watcher finds out Clarence was convicted and is now on death row for slaying a undercover police officer. Also this movie aired before the case even went to trail. With Legal Aid busy the group only has 55 minutes to file an appeal and they only just make it. Darn the weak Wifi connection.

In court we have the return of Judge Cuesta, played by David Paymer, and a loss in the appeal. Alicia talks with Clarence’s wife and daughter and is moved by the wife’s certainty of her husband’s innocence and the snapshot of Clarence holding his daughter. Cary was given the same snapshot and reveals the same encounter but it doesn’t matter because Cary and Alicia are hooked.

Cary and Alicia track down the eyewitness to the murder who is still certain in the belief Clarence did it. Kalinda is sucked into the investigation and interviews Detective Shores. She finds out the suspects shown to the eyewitness, only one wore a Bulls sweatshirt like the cop killer did in the suspect’s lineup, Clarence.

Kalinda asks for help from Peter but Peter claims he wants to help but can’t help since he is always under constant surveillance. Alicia must see him under conjugal circumstances where there is no surveillance. Of course Alicia is upset Kalinda seen her husband without her knowing and suspicions are aroused.

Alicia goes to the conjugal visit, is patted down and can’t leave till 6am but don’t worry there is a “panic button.” Peter sleeps on the floor and with every suspected reconnection with Peter, Alicia pulls away. Alicia gets dirt on the cop, which doesn’t work in court. Cary discovers that one-month after Clarence is convicted a guy with the same M.O. as the cop killer robbed a liquor store but he died in jail.

Apparently almost everyone in court owns the same Bulls sweatshirt as Clarence except the detective and the eyewitness is trick by Cary and Alicia when they switch faces on the mug shot, getting her to identify the man who died in prison, not Clarence.

Clarence is ruled innocent and is set free but Judge Cuesta is pissed because he doesn’t like reversals. He tells the prosecutor to tell his boss to blame it on his predecessor, Peter Florrick’s team. It is hard to read Alicia at the sound of that but she seems to find solace in Clarence’s first meeting with his wife and daughter at the end.
