Survivor Samoa: The Merge
5-Nov-2009
Written by: Maria Miaoulis
Last-minute scrambling leaves Russell nervous as the tribes merge.
We have reached the midway point of the competition – the merging of Foa Foa and Galu. Thank goodness! It becomes boring when every week follows the same pattern.
Tonight’s episode opened with tension within Galu as Laura and Shambo exchanged words about a lost canteen. Foa Foa on the other hand prepared for the merge, deciding they should stick together but do everything to stir up drama at Galu.
Foa Foa was able to put this strategy into action right away because the two groups merged. The game was put on hold long enough to enjoy a feast and create a tribe flag under a new name – Aiga, meaning extended family.
Once back at camp, Russell lost no time pulling out his bag of tricks. He decided to take aside each Galu player, show them his hidden immunity idol and convince them to keep him around longer than the rest of Foa Foa. His sales pitch to Laura though did not go over well, especially when he tried to persuade her to vote out one of her own teammates. Not used to having his authority challenged, Russell immediately campaigned for her to get voted out. Of course Shambo was all for this idea, and the plan to blindside Laura was put into motion.
However Laura and John won immunity in a rare double immunity challenge, putting an end to that arrangement. This left Russell feeling antsy since he would have to play the idol in case he was blindsided. Laura and Erik counted on this and decided to trick Russell into thinking he would get voted out so he could play the idol, but they would vote for someone else instead. But then John came along and convinced Erik they should vote out Monica since he believed the lies Russell told him. Either way the point was to get Russell to give up the idol.
When Erik then spread the word about this new plan he threatened Foa Foa to vote this way or risk going home. The minority decided to oust Erik. Natalie convinced the others that Erik was untrustworthy so everyone agreed to vote him out. All this last-minute scrambling had Russell sweating because he wasn’t in control.
Throughout tribal council, Erik was oblivious to what awaited him, talking down to Foa Foa members and remarking they would get picked off one by one. Little did he know he would be voted out 7-2 or else he would have used his hidden idol to save himself. In any case he is now the first member of the jury.
