Conan O’Brien Apologizes Over Twitter Misrepresentation
6-Nov-2009

And then gets the last laugh.
Conan O'Brien and William Shatner made fun of the father of Sarah Palin's grandson on O'Brien's late night show. Shatner gave a dramatic reading of comments found on Levi Johnston's Twitter account. Routine, stuff, huh? So what's the problem? The 19-year-old claims that he doesn't even use the site.
Johnston's lawyer, Rex Butler, criticized the move by the two comedians, saying that Johnston's nonuse of the popular social site was common knowledge. "A simple phone call before would have taken care of it," he told E! News.
Johnston got his apology on Thursday night's O'Brien. But as the saying goes be careful what you wish for. What Johnston expected, who knows, but of course a comedy-based late-night show will capitalize in any way.
The apology started off sincere enough. "We'd been following Levi on Twitter and felt his gift for the written word needed to be shared with the world," O'Brien explained on his show. "Today...I got some shocking news: Apparently the tweets that we read are counterfeit. They were written by a clever imposter posing as the witty Levi Johnston. And the real Levi is very angry with us."
So far, so good. And then the apology:
"I would like to personally apologize to Levi Johnston and his lawyer and publicist for misrepresenting him in any way."
And then William Shatner came back out. Only this time, the quotes used were said to be verified.
"The first thing Sarah said to me at the hotel was, 'You gotta cut your hair.'" Shatner monologued. "'I told her I didn't want to. I had a mullet at the time."
Haha...haha...ha.
