Calle 13 Sweep Latin Grammys with 5 Wins
The big winner at the Latin Grammys in Las Vegas on Thursday night was undoubtedly the Puerto Rican hip-hop group Calle 13, who won all five awards they were nominated for, including Album of the Year (Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo) and Record of the Year ("No Hay Nadie Como Tú").
Lead singer René Pérez, a.k.a. Residente, said during his Album of the Year acceptance speech that he had many people to dedicate the award to, one of whom was Argentine folk singer Mercedes Sosa. "May she rest in peace. An applause for Mercedes Sosa, please," he said.
"To all the people who make music in this moment of independent music, to hell with record labels!" Residente declared while accepting the alternative-song trophy, according to E! Online. "This is the moment for those of us who make real music."
Other winners of the evening included Nicaraguan salsero Luis Enrique, who won best tropical song for "Yo No Sé Mañana" (I Don't Know Tomorrow); Mexican rock group Jaguares, who won the Latin Grammy for best rock album by a duo or group with vocal for "45;" and Juan Gabriel who took home the award for Latin Academy's 2009 Person of the Year.
