With the Verizon Droid receiving a majority of the publicity in the world of technology this past week, rumors as swirling about how Apple plans to counter-act the Droid

While some people appeared to be under the impression that Verizon’s cutting-edge Droid phones would jeopardize and rival the long-term popularity of Apple iPhone’s, CNet.com is reporting that early Droid sales indicate that it is cutting into the popularity of Blackberry phones more so than iPhones. There are rumors currently circulating that indicate the potential creation of a Verizon iPhone that would be introduced to the market in the third quarter of next year.

The Apple Insider Blog has shed light on this new phone that is sure to generate a great deal of attention amongst Verizon customers. Apple is planning on developing a hybrid, world-mode iPhone that could be distributed as a single global handset to all carriers in the United States, including Verizon. The cutting-edge hybrid iPhone would be compatible with the CDMA and GSM/UMTS systems as opposed to just the GSM/UMTS systems, which is currently the predicament that Apple finds itself in with its current iPhone models.

While no official comment has been provided by Apple or Verizon in response to rumors over the creation of a hybrid, world-mode iPhone, CNet.com is speculating that it would become the most anticipated smartphone to hit the market in history.
