Friday’s Ticket Sales Show Nothing Fantastic
7-Nov-2009
Written by: Blakely Slater
Rough estimates for Friday’s movie ticket sales do not indicate any hope for record-breaking numbers.
Early estimates for Friday’s box-office sales place “A Christmas Carol” in the top spot, but do not necessarily indicate a fantastic debut for the film.
The Disney holiday film grossed approximately $9 million in the U.S. and Canada, reports the LA Times. While this was enough to beat out other movies in terms of ticket sales, it suggests that the final numbers at the close of the weekend will be lower than predicted.
Production costs for “A Christmas Carol” totaled $200 million and much more was spent on marketing. Surveys conducted before Friday estimated that the movie would open with at least $40 million in sales domestically over the first three days, but the number from Friday suggests that the total will most likely be closer to $30 or $35 million.
Three other hyped films that debuted on Friday had sales of $5 million or less.
Universal’s thriller “The Fourth Kind” brought in $5 million, according to Entertainment Weekely. George Clooney’s satirical comedy, “The Men Who Stare at Goats” was only slightly behind with $4.6 million.
“The Box,” starring Cameron Diaz, had a more disappointing opening night. The film tied holdover “Paranormal Activity” in sales with $2.9 million.
Complete reports with the weekend’s numbers will give a better indication of each movie’s success.
