‘Wizards of Waverly Place' star to become ‘Harriet the Spy’
Jennifer Stone, a cast member on the thriving Disney channel original series “Wizards of Waverly Place,'' is set to star in the title role of the upcoming Disney Channel telepic “Harriet the Spy,” which is set to air next year.
According to an article on Variety.com, “’Harriet the Spy,’ based on the children's book by Louise Fitzhugh, got the bigscreen treatment in 1996 with Michelle Trachtenberg in the starring role… Canadian producer 9 Story Entertainment (which will co-produce with Disney) presold the film in October.’”
“Jennifer Stone is a great talent for our network,'' sad Disney Channel programming head David Levine. “We know kids love to see series stars in movies.''
“Harriet’s” teleplay was penned by Heather Conkie and Alexandra Clarke and will be helmed by director/producer Ron Oliver.
The Variety.com article also mentions how this new “Harriet” will differ from the original, “Loosely adapted from the original story, the new version casts Harriet as a movie producer's daughter determined to become the class blogger by dishing on the star of one of her dad's pics.”
Blake McGrath, who was a contestant on the highly popular Fox dance competition series "So You Think You Can Dance" will be the pic’s choreographer.
Choosing Stone for the title role looks to be a smart move on the part of the Disney Channel brass since “Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie'' has been ranked as cable’s No. 2 scripted telecast of all time, garnering a total of 13.5 million viewers behind the network’s other massively successful 2007 pic “High School Musical 2.”
