USS New York Contains 7.5 Tons of Steel from World Trade Center

The Navy’s newest warship cost $1 billion to make and it is symbolic of our nation’s resiliency

The USS New York was unveiled earlier today in a touching ceremony that was held at New York’s Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum. According to The New York Daily News, prominent political figures such as New York Governor David Paterson, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton attended the ceremony. y there were approximately 6,000 spectators in attendance at the event. The New York Daily News is reporting that The USS New York will be heading to its home port at Virginia’s Norfolk Naval Station on Thursday. The Navy’s newest warship cost approximately $1 billion to create and it contains 7.5 tons of the World Trade Center’s steel in its bow stem.

Commander Curt Jones provided a comment during the meaningful ceremony that explained his perspective on the creation of the USS New York, stating, “There is a lot of emotion that is associated with this ship for all of us. The steel that is in the bow of this ship, that motivates us literally every day in what we do.”

The Louisiana-based Northrop Grumman Corporation built the USS New York and the Corporation’s President, Mike Petters, described his thoughts on the finished product by saying, “We needed this ship, New York needed this ship, America needed this ship.”
