'A Christmas Carol' a Massive Disappointment at the Box Office Thus Far
With the substantial amount of money that Walt Disney Studios put into their 2009 big-budget holiday-themed film A Christmas Carol', the studio will undoubtedly be disappointed with the opening day numbers that it received at the box office. According to The Los Angeles Times, A Christmas Carol' grossed an estimated $9 million at the box office in the United States and Canada in its opening day on Friday.
Pre-release surveys projected that A Christmas Carol', which stars Jim Carrey, would open at approximately $40 million over its first three days in theatres. However, The Los Angeles Times is now predicting that the film will likely gross just $30 million in its opening weekend, which will undoubtedly come as a shock and an undeniable disappointment to Walt Disney Studios.
Not only did the studio invest a great deal of financial backing into the film's pre-release marketing plan but A Christmas Carol' also worked with a $200 million production budget. Walt Disney Studios will likely turn its attention overseas where they hope that the movie will gross a significantly larger amount of money.
According to experts from The Los Angeles Times, family movies tend to remain in theatres for a longer period of time than other films and since it is a holiday-themed release it will almost certainly remain in theatres through the end of the year.
