Fedor Emelianenko TKO’d formerly undefeated heavyweight Brett Rogers in the 2nd round of tonight’s Strikeforce main event
Russian heavyweight Fedor Emeliankenko was a six-to-one favorite coming into tonight’s Strikeforce main event and although his opponent, formerly undefeated heavyweight Brett Rogers, proved to be a more formidable foe than many mixed martial arts experts expected him to be, his size and strength was no match for Emelianenko’s technique and explosiveness.
Emelianenko knocked down Rogers with a devastating straight right hand that connected flush on Rogers’ chin in the 2nd round of their heavyweight fight before finishing him off with ground and pound. Referee John McCarthy signaled that the fight was over and Emelianenko was mobbed by his entourage in the center of the cage.
Most mixed martial arts experts considered Rogers to be a one-dimensional power puncher with a glaring weakness on the ground coming into tonight’s main event. Although Rogers was nearly submitted twice in the first round, once by an armbar and once by a kimura, he displayed toughness and resiliency in defeat.
Rogers appeared to break Emelianenko’s nose with the first punch that he landed in the first round, which was a left jab that effectively cut his opponent. However, Emelianenko is renowned for his ability to overcome adversity by remaining eerily calm and executing his game plan and he showed exactly why in tonight’s main event.
Tonight marked the first time in Fedor Emelianenko’s illustrious career that he fought inside of a cage and tonight’s Strikeforce event was the first ever to be aired live in primetime on the CBS network. Earlier in the event, Jake Shields defeated Jason Miller by unanimous decision to capture the vacant Strikeforce Middleweight Championship while Gegard Mousasi TKO’d Sokoudjou in the 2nd round to retain his Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Championship.
