Despite the fact that House Republicans had appeared to be united in unanimously voting against the bill, one House Republican voted in favor of the bill
The revisions that were made to the health care reform bill by House Democrats late into Friday night appear to have paid off. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the health care reform bill by the narrowest of margins this evening, according to The New York Daily News. The reform passed by a vote of 220 to 215 largely due to President Barack Obama’s Saturday morning speech to House Democrats as well as the revisions that were made.
Earlier in the week, Fox News reported that House Republicans had reached a consensus opinion and that they would unanimously vote against the Democrats’ proposed health care bill. However, Republican House representative from Louisiana Joseph Cao surprisingly decided to go against the grain by voting in favor of the bill.
The most debated topic of the bill that required House Democrats to make revisions in order to appeal to voters who had been undecided was federal funding for abortion. Before the House Democrats edited their proposal, conservative representatives within the political party threatened to vote against it.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who expressed her confidence that he bill would be passed on Friday evening when she guaranteed it, gave a statement in response to tonight’s vote, saying, “President Obama’s leadership gives our nation hope. Today, with this legislation, we will give them health.”
