U.S. General George Casey Calls for More Troops in Afghanistan

Gen. Casey becomes the latest prominent U.S. military official to promote the notion of sending more troops to Afghanistan

As President Barack Obama contemplates his long-term strategy for how to handle our nation's war in Afghanistan, he continues to listen to requests from U.S. military officials who are advocating the option of sending more troops to the area. According to Reuters.com, U.S. General George Casey has become the latest military official to ask the President to send more troops to Afghanistan during an interview response he gave on NBC's ‘Meet the Press'.

In response to a question about his opinion regarding our nation's war in Afghanistan, Casey said, "I believe that we need to put additional forces into Afghanistan to give General McChrystal the ability to both dampen the successes of the Taliban while we train the Afghan civilian forces." Unlike McChrystal, who specifically recommended that we send 40,000 troops to Afghanistan, Casey did not provide an opinion about how many should be sent.

Reuters.com is reporting that President Obama is currently going through the process of developing a long-term war strategy and is considering all options from the Pentagon. Officials close to the situation are speculating that one Pentagon option that is receiving a significant amount of consideration is to send approximately 30,000 additional American troops to Afghanistan.
