Retired Army colonel and former military judge John P. Galligan will be representing former Army psychiatrist Nidal Malik Hasan
John P. Galligan, a former military judge and retired Army colonel, told ABC News on Monday that he has been hired by the family of Fort Hood gunman and former Army psychiatrist Major Nidal Malik Hasan for representation. Galligan announced that Hasan’s family retained him to represent the alleged gunman who shot and killed 13 members of the military and injured 42 others.
Galligan has already traveled from his Boston-based office to the Brooke Army Medical Center where Hasan is currently receiving treatment. It was reported earlier today that Hasan has regained consciousness, been removed from a ventilator and is well enough to communicate with members of the hospital’s staff.
In a brief statement that was given to ABC News, Galligan said, "I don't think we really know all of the facts, we don't know what the charges are, we're not even necessarily sure of exactly what the specific jurisdictions." Hasan has yet to be formally charged but it is expected that he will be tried in military court and law experts are predicting that he will face 13 separate charges of first-degree murder, one for each person who was killed.
Galligan acted quickly as Hasan’s representative earlier today by requesting that federal authorities stay away from his new client, according to ABC News.
