President Obama Asks Congress to Revise Proposal's Abortion Restrictions
Last Friday, House Democrats stayed up late into the night to make necessary revisions to their health care reform bill, which included the insertion of an amendment that would prevent federal funding for abortion with exceptions for cases of rape, incest or life endangerment. President Barack Obama announced on Monday that he would like to see Congress revise the House's health care legislation further as a result of his discomfort with abortion restrictions being placed into the bill.
According to The New York Times, President Obama was specifically concerned about not restricting women from insurance options and he clarified that those who are content and satisfied with their current health insurance would not have to change theirs. While Democratic Senators are optimistic about their legislation gaining momentum as a result of the passing of the House's health care proposal, political experts are predicting that the most difficult aspects of health care reform are still yet to come.
President Obama elaborated on his opinion regarding the abortion issue when it comes to its placement in the health care legislation during an interview with ABC News. The President stated, "There needs to be some more work before we get to the point where we're not changing the status quo and that's the goal. We're not looking to change what is the principle that has been in place for a very long time, which is federal dollars are not used to subsidize abortions."
