Carrie Underwood's "Play On" to Top Billboard Charts with 318,000 Sales
The soundtrack to the "Michael Jackson: This Is It" documentary will be unseated from the top position on the Billboard charts next week as result of the first week sales for Carrie Underwood's "Play On" album. The country music superstar's latest album sold an impressive 318,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielson SoundScan. "Play On" is Underwood's second consecutive album release to debut at the number one position on the charts.
According to MTV.com, Underwood's second album "Carnival Ride" moved 527,000 units in its opening week back in 2007 but the sales that "Play On" has achieved in its opening week are undeniably impressive. "Michael Jackson: This Is It" has sold upwards of 500,000 copies in its first two weeks and its outstanding sales totals are expected to continue as a result of the recently extended theatrical duration of the film.
The Nielson SoundScan charts show that Jay-Z's "The Blueprint 3" will fall out of the top ten for the first time since it was released in September. Taylor Swift's "Fearless" remained in the top ten at the number six position on the charts while a few bands that are attempting to make a mainstream comeback such as Weezer and Creed found themselves on the charts at the number seven and number 14, respectively.
