'Modern Warfare 2' Brings Out The Big Guns
Halo 3, Grand Theft Auto IV, and now Activision Blizzard's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. What do all these have in common? Besides kicking ass and taking names, they've all broken video game industry records for first-day sales. The Master Chief in 2007 with 3.3 million units, Niko in 2008 with 3.7 million units, and now Modern Warfare with an estimated 4.7 million in the U.S. and U.K. alone. That's about $310 million, folks.
The immensely-hyped military shooter released Tuesday and is a bright light in the otherwise dim videogame world. October sales figures for the industry will be announced today and the game is expected to affect otherwise low numbers and provide momentum going into the holiday season.
Modern Warfare 2, which has a 95% rating on the RottenTomatoes of videogames, GameRankings.com, owes most of its early success to the U.S., but it is still beasting overseas. With 1.2 million units in the U.K., it has doubled Grand Theft Auto IV's numbers for first day.
Analysts had previously predicted Activision's moneymaker to sell close to 12 million units through October and December. It will be interesting to see how predictions change by the end of the week.
