GameStop to offer digital download upgrades to video games

GameStop retailers will soon be unveiling a program that will allow its customers to acquire upgrades of their favorite video games via digital downloads.

Video game enthusiasts will soon be able to purchase upgrades via digital downloads of their favorite games through GameStop retailers.

According to an article on HollywoodReporter.com, "The new program, which GameStop will start testing early next year, will work in conjunction with online services offered by leading console makers, such as Microsoft's Xbox Live and Sony's PlayStation Network."

As to how the new program works, if a GameStop shopper learns about a new level available for a war or sports game, the program will allow them to instantly buy that upgrade and when they get home, the add-on will be available for them to download and play.

"A large market for full game downloads is not imminent, (but) the add-on downloadable market will grow," GameStop COO Paul Raines said at the BMO Capital Management Digital Entertainment conference.

These extra payments may be the crucial push needed to boost revenue for publishers and retailers in the video-game industry, which has seen sluggish overall growth amidst the rough economy. The hope is that consumers will be more willing to purchase an upgrade of a game they know rather then try out an unfamiliar one.

Yet, despite the economic recession, GameStop stores have managed to keep consumers purchasing video game consoles by Nintendo Co. Ltd., Sony and Microsoft.

Following the BMO conference, GameStop CEO Dan DeMatteo said looking ahead to next year, business is "expected to be strong, given known titles."
