Wie wins first LPGA tournament of her career
Michelle Wie won her first professional tournament Sunday, the first win of any kind for Wie since 2003 when she was 13 years old.
Wie won the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Guadalajara, Mexico shooting a 3 under 69 on Sunday. She hung onto a two stroke lead to outlast Paula Creamer.
This was the first tournament Wie has played in over a month. The 20-year-old is also a student at Stanford, where she is in her third year. Wie is a full-time student during the fall and winter terms, but takes a break from her studies in mid-March when the LPGA season becomes more intense.
Sunday's win is a start to fulfilling what may have been the most anticipated career in recent history. Wie first qualified for a USGA event when she was 10 years old and played a LPGA event at the age of 12. Wie has struggled some with injuries and the expectations.
She has experimented with playing on the men's tour and almost became the first woman to qualify for the men's U.S. Open. She has since rededicated herself to the women's game, going to qualifying school and earning her LPGA card for this season.
Wie has finished second twice this season, and has two other third-place finishes on the LPGA Tour.
