20,000 Leagues Project Hits Iceberg
Who doesn't love big-budget Disney films? Pirates of the Caribbean, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles. They all have a certain magic to them that captivates children and summons the kid in the grown-ups who wouldn't dare admit it.
Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was almost one of those movies, but Variety has confirmed that Disney has placed an indefinite hold on the epic remake.
The movie was set to start production in February, but since the ousting of Dick Cook, new Disney chief Rich Ross has restructured the movie studio and moved the next 'Pirates' movie up in priority.
In addition, director McG (Terminator Salvation) jumped ship. It's too bad, too, because he had been trying to get Will Smith to play the tole of Captain Nemo. Even though there may have been one too many "Oh Hell Naw's!" for my tastes, it could have been a fun ride.
It's also sad that the company isn't giving due respect to its own masterpiece. The classic Jules Verne fiction novel was the basis for Walt Disney's first live-action film in 1954, the original 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
