New York Knicks Considering Signing Ten-Time All-Star Allen Iverson
There has been very little reason for optimism for New York Knicks fans over the past several years as a result of a series of salary-cap-killing free agent acquisitions and bizarre trades that have led to an image of consistent mediocrity that has been portrayed by the franchise. Current General Manager Donnie Walsh has attempted to clean up after mistakes made by his predecessors that have restricted his ability make a significant difference.
However, he is also handcuffed by the fact that the team, which is all but certain have one of the worst records in the league in 2009, does not have a first round pick in 2010 due to a trade that was made by Isiah Thomas. In an attempt to try to increase ticket sales and attendance at Madison Square Garden for the rest of the season, Walsh is reportedly interested in signing ten-time All-Star shooting guard Allen Iverson.
Iverson and the Memphis Grizzlies mutually parted ways earlier this week after alleged personal issues surfaced in Iverson's life. However, speculation that Iverson was simply frustrated with his backup role to emerging young star O.J. Mayo reportedly appeared to be the reason for the breakup.
For the Knicks to be able to sign Iverson, he would have to clear waivers at 6 P.M. EST on Thursday night. With the franchise making player personnel decisions entirely based on the upcoming free agency period of 2010 when young superstars such as LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Amare Stoudemire and Chris Bosh are slated to hit the open market, ESPN.com is reporting that the Knicks would likely offer a one-year contract to Iverson.
