Children will get Santa letter answered after all
Washington Post officials decided to reverse the move to end a 55-year-old holiday volunteer service, in which Alaskan volunteers reply to children's letters to Santa.
According to the United Press International, last year, a postal worker discovered a convicted sex offender was one of the volunteers with access to the Santa letters, which set off alarm bells about the safety of the children who's letters were being read. The program, which was founded in the town of North Pole, Alaska, receives an estimated 150,000 letters a year from children.
When pressure from Alaskans to continue the cherished program mounted, the postal service said the program could continue with new security measures. Since children's personal safety is the biggest concern, some of their letters will be edited before they are sent on to volunteers in the program. Hopefully, the new safely regulations will help maintain this kind, creative holiday service.
