Tennis superstar Serena Williams was fined a record $82,500 for her foul-mouthed attack aimed towards a lineswoman at September's U.S. Open, and will be on a "probationary period" through 2011, Grand Slam administrator Bill Babcock said Monday, RadarOnline reports.
During Williams' Open semifinals match against eventual winner, Kim Clijsters, Williams was called for a foot fault, which gave Clijsters match point. Instead of trying to save the point, Williams lashed out at the line judge, swearing, and then approached her and shook her racket at her. Williams immediately lost the next point due to her outburst, which subsequently ended the match.
The fine was in addition to the initial $10,000 fine from the U.S. Tennis Association. Per the terms of her probation, Williams, whose career prize earnings top $28 million, can be charged higher fines or excluded from future U.S. Opens if she has another offense at any of the Grand Slams in the next two years while on probation.
Williams' fine breaks Jeff Tarango's record set for a Grand Slam offense of $48,000 in the 1990s.
