Warner Bros. enthralled by 'Beautiful Creatures'
With the "Harry Potter" franchise drawing to a close, Warner Bros., has purchased yet another witch-themed project in the form of "Beautiful Creatures," the first of a five-novel series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.
The studio bought the first chapter of the novel series in hopes that its film adaptation will mirror the tremendous success of the "Potter" films. "Creatures" will be published Dec. 1 by Little, Brown & Co.
An article on Variety.com describes "Creatures'" plot, "Ethan Wate, a popular high school student, hates living in a small [town] in South Carolina where nothing happensuntil he meets and becomes bewitched by Lena Duchanne, a 16-year old whose family has moved back to town and who wishes for a mundane life. The star-crossed couple has to confront an age old curse that has haunted her family for generations, as she comes to grips with her powers."
Richard LaGravanese will be writing and directing the film. LaGravanese also wrote and directed both the 2007 Hilary Swank/Gerard Butler romantic drama, "P.S. I Love You," and the 1998 Holly Hunter/Danny DeVito/Queen Latifah romantic dramedy, "Living Out Loud."
Though LaGravanese's past credits have included both the writing and directing of a number of female-geared films, he expounds on his elation on working on the first motion picture of his career that deals with a genre that has fascinated him for some time, the supernatural, "I love supernatural stories that have well drawn mythologies, and I liked that this book has all the basic elements of a classic first love story with a supernatural layer over it," LaGravanese said.
Erwin Stoff will be the motion picture's producer. Stoff's past producing credits include being the executive producer of the 2009 Sandra Bullock/Tim McGraw/Quinton Aaron sports drama, "The Blind Side."
