Nicolas Cage Receives United Nations Honors

Nicolas Cage was recognized by the United Nations for devoting himself to philanthropic causes.

Nicolas Cage may be having financial issues. But that has not stopped the actor from being philanthropic, and the United Nations recognized him for doing so with the Global Citizen of the Year Award Friday.

Cage, 45, donated $2 million to help former child soldiers, and was also the leader of a campaign created to raise awareness of arms control across the globe, reported E! Online.

The UN also recognized Cage with more than the award, naming him their Goodwill Ambassador for Global Justice for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Cage has dedicated himself to to the cause in recent years.

"My real life role as UNODC Goodwill Ambassador will certainly be even more challenging and meaningful than those I have portrayed on screen," Cage said in a statement. "I intend to shine the spotlight on the need for global justice, publicize all the good work that UNODC is doing, and highlight how we can all make a difference."
