Florida Braces for Hurricane Storm

South Florida prepares for hurricane storm, Katrina to move in Thursday, Aug. 25th

The coast of South Florida braces for a hurricane as the tropical storm, Katrina, is set to move in on the Fort Lauderdale area for landfall late Thursday, August 25th or early the next day. A 170-mile stretch of coastline between Vero Beach and Florida City is under hurricane warning, which means winds of at least 74 mph are expected. The warning area includes the major cities of Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Lake Okeechobee. Max Mayfield, director of the National Hurricane Center, told CNN the storm as a "very good chance" of strengthening into a Category 1 or Category 2 hurricane by the time it reaches Florida. Forecasters expect the storm to slow as it approaches South Florida, creating the potential for up to a foot of rain, and as much as 20 inches in some areas.
